We Need to add something here about the festival or Ousmane Sembene.

Our Mission

Sembéne – The Film & Arts Festival (SFAF) was created to celebrate the life; work; and honor the legacy of Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembéne -  the Father of African Cinema.

The film festival presents Sembéne’s films, along with a broad spectrum of award-winning films from around the globe.  No matter the genre or the region in the world - the films speak to the critical issues facing the African Diaspora.  In this way, the film festival serves as a vehicle to offer a more expansive, diverse, multi-dimensional image of people of African descent through film and other complimentary events.

Our Vision

In 2009, when SFAF formed, the last time that an African film was selected as part of Pittsburgh's major film festival was six years before in 2003.

It's 2020! As the Festival continues its 11th season it will continue to be a vehicle that gives voice to the people of the African Diaspora.
